FEATURED ARTIST: Lisa Corbett

Lisa Corbett began the initial phase of her creative career as a modern dancer and was co-founder, co-director, choreographer, performer, and instructor for a Northwest modern dance company. Soon after being awarded The Artist Trust Foundation grant for choreography, Lisa completed her M.S. degree and lived, worked, and traveled in China. This background and experience provide a framework from and through which her work emerges. Lisa paints in acrylics and believes the intensity of colors, the modern context of acrylics, and the immediacy of their nature, coincide with her philosophy of living in, capturing, and expression of moments and impressions. Concepts derived from dance that are incorporated in her work include breath, movement, energy, flow, composition, dynamics, and balance. As Lisa paints, her interaction with the canvas is reminiscent of dance improvisation, and each work is a unique and vibrant choreography. In addition, Lisa’s travels in various Asian, and other, countries also provide an influence in her art, as she integrates philosophies of Feng Shui, and cultural concepts into her pieces.

FEATURED BAND: The Boom Booms

Playing at the Belltown Community Center at 415 Bell Street between, The Boom Booms are going to rock Belltown live 8-10pm – join your neighbors from Vancouver, BC as this rising star descends upon Seattle with special thanks to BOSA Developmentwho are building the inspiring Insignia Condominiums in Belltown.

The Boom Booms began in BC’s glamorous tree-planting camps. Planting trees by day and creating and performing music by night for their tree-planting posse was a typical spring season for the childhood friends. Once the season ended, they kept the momentum going by producing their very own neighborhood block party. The “Boom Boom Block Party” became a summer highlight for East Vancouver residents for four years and raised over $20,000 for organizations such as Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA); Contributing to Lives of Inner City Youth and The Music Tree, a not-for-profit foundation that is dedicated to raising awareness of ecological community projects through fundraising concerts and events. Co-founded by Aaron Ross and supported by The Boom Booms, The Music Tree is committed to “greening” the planet by inspiring people to get involved in community building and self-sustainability.

The Boom Booms have built a loyal fan base that stretches across generations. The video for their feel-good party anthem, “When the Night”, reached #6 on the Much More Music chart in 2008 and was optioned for an episode of 90210. “Delivered”, a surreal banjo ballad that conjures up images of a jungle river baptism, garnered an award for Best Roots Song at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards in Nashville.

Kirkland Community News: Park Lane Reopens Today

KING COUNTY’S KIRKLAND PUMP STATION CONSTRUCTION IS COMPLETE AND THE EAST PORTION OF PARK LANE WHICH HAS BEEN CLOSED SINCE 2011 WILL REOPEN TODAY.

Park Lane, between Main Street and Third Street, will reopen to two-way traffic on March 13, 2014. This roadway has been used as a staging area for the King County Kirkland Pump Station and Sewer Upgrade Project since September 2011. Crews are still completing finishing touches on the pump station, the County worked to reopen the roadway as early as possible.

Jess Hibdon and Oscar Gonzalez clean on March 11 construction-related sediment from a stormwater vault along Park Lane. This was one of the last few tasks workers completed in order to open the street to two-way traffic today.

Although the upgraded pump station has been operational since summer 2013, the King County Wastewater Treatment Division continues to finish small interior and exterior improvements. It is anticipated that the pump station will be complete in May 2014. The upgraded pump station increases capacity, ensures safe and reliable operations and meets current seismic, noise, and odor control standards.

Flexible Street Design on Park Lane

You may notice that Park Lane looks a little different in front of the pump station. The County has completed the first portion of a flexible, plaza-style street design that the City of Kirkland is planning for Park Lane from Lake Street to Third Street.

Flexible streets allow for public gathering spaces by eliminating curbs and narrowing driving lanes to allow for wider pedestrian areas. The roadway also includes benches, landscaped planting areas, lighting and Low Impact Development (LID) components (i.e., rain gardens, and porous pavement) to manage stormwater. The City of Kirkland is currently in the design phase for this project. Grand Opening of The Connoisseurs of Life Showroom

Representatives of Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty announced today the official grand opening of their new flagship branch office at 15 Lake Street in downtown Kirkland. The firm opens to the public at 11:00am on Saturday, March 1^st, 2014. This debut follows a series of private events and promotions within the Connoisseurs of Life Showroom, which fronts the real estate brokerage and includes a new downtown Kirkland office for Cobalt Mortgage. The retail partnerships are comprised of an independent wine bar and retail wine shop operated by DeLille Cellars called “Maison DeLille”, a dramatic installation by LightArt®, high-tech presentations by Wipliance, furnishings and artwork from Masins, Alchemy Collections and The Island Gallery, and even an integrated photo booth by The Snap Bar to capture the events.

Community News | Fan Fest Planned For Kirkland in Anticipation of Seahawk Victory

“True-blue” (and even fair-weather) Seahawk fans are invited to Kirkland’s Marina Park on Saturday, Jan. 18, for a “12th Man Fan Fair.”

The fan fair is in honor of the Seattle Seahawks advancing into the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers to be held on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014.

Beginning at 3:30 p.m., Kirkland Mayor Amy Walen and fellow city council members will raise a “12th Man” flag to a drum roll by the Seahawks Blue Thunder.

The event will begin at the Plaza of Champions, at Marina Park, 25 Lakeshore Plaza Drive.

Following the raising of the flag, fans are to form the number 12 on the beach for a photograph and video to be shared with media.

Fans can take their picture with Blitz, the official team mascot and with inflatable Seahawks players.

The city will organize a bonfire on the beach. Come dressed in your best Seahawks fan costume to be judged by local officials. Activities and promotional materials will be provided by Sea Hawkers Booster Club the at the Marina Park pavilion throughout the event.

Kirkland fans are encouraged to share their cheers, fan “selfies,” and pictures of where their “12th Man” flags are displayed on the city’s Explore Kirkland Facebook site: www.facebook.com/explorekirkland.

Kirkland restaurants will be offering food and beverage game-day specials and airing the game on Jan. 19, which starts at 3:30 p.m.

KIRKLAND PRINCIPALS NAMED KING COUNTY PRINCIPALS OF THE YEAR

The principals at both of Lake Washington School District’s comprehensive high schools in Kirkland have been named KingCo Principals of the Year:Juanita High School Principal Gary Moed for the 3A level and Lake Washington High School Principal Christina Thomas for 2A. In addition, Juanita High School Associate Principal Gloria Heier was nominated for the 3A Assistant Principal of the Year award. Principals are anonymously nominated by their fellow KingCo principals for these awards.

Gary was nominated for making significant progress at Juanita High School.

“Gary shows great enthusiasm for a student-first mentality, is modest in approach and willing to ask questions and share openly in principal meetings, and was known as a contributor in state-wide initiatives as well, representing the KingCo League on state level committees,” the nominator said. “He is warm and inviting, prepares for our meetings, and brings thoughtful reflection to our dialogue.”

Christina was nominated for successfully opening Lake Washington High School with progressive education ideas to help all students succeed.

“Always a proactive participant in Principal meetings and has warmly embraced the Professional Learning Community of principals we have,” said her nominator. “Christina will serve as the KingCo President next year and has done a fantastic job as the President Elect. She is well read, prepared, and open to share and discuss the challenges she faces, to help other principals take risks in sharing where they need help as well.”

Each year, the KingCo league (comprising 19 schools) selects principals of the year who embody leadership attributes that are acknowledged and appreciated by his/her principal peers. A principal is selected for each level (4A, 3A, 2A) as well as an associate principal in each level. These principals are then entered into the Association of Washington School Principal’s pool for Principal or Assistant Principal of the Year for the state.

This is the second time that Gary Moed has received this recognition. He was also selected in the 2011-2012 school year.
